Three Strong Quakes Shake Region
Three earthquakes, including one of the strongest ever recorded, struck off the coast of New Zealand in the last 24 hours. The largest quake, with a magnitude of 7.1, occurred in a remote part of the Pacific Ocean on Friday afternoon. A smaller quake, with a magnitude of 5.7, hit near Geraldine at 9:14am local time on Saturday. A third quake, with a magnitude of 5.2, struck at 3:52pm local time on Saturday.
No Injuries Reported
There were no reports of injuries or significant damage from any of the earthquakes. The quake near Geraldine was felt widely across the South Island, but caused no major problems.
Tsunami Warning Lifted
A tsunami warning that was issued for parts of New Zealand following the 7.1 earthquake was lifted on Friday afternoon. The warning was issued after the quake generated a small tsunami that was observed at some coastal locations.
74 Earthquakes in 24 Hours
The three earthquakes are part of a swarm of seismic activity that has been occurring in the region over the past few days. Over 74 earthquakes have been recorded around New Zealand in the past 24 hours.
Strongest Quake Ever Recorded
The 7.1 earthquake is the strongest earthquake to hit the region since a magnitude 7.8 quake in 2016. That quake caused significant damage and injuries.
Ongoing Monitoring
Scientists are continuing to monitor the seismic activity in the region. They are not sure what is causing the swarm of earthquakes, but they are working to learn more.
